Large Scale Conversion of Legacy Hard Copy Content to Digital Version
Customer Description
Major journal publisher from Europe with large volume of legacy content in hard copy format
Project Requirements
MPS was asked to provide large-scale hard copy to PDF and XML conversion services for a journal publisher’s archive, which consisted of about 100 years of historic data.
Key Challenges
Scanning hardcopy materials of different sizes and quality at an initial at level of 600 DPI to make the digital copy (TIFF) usable for other purposes.
Providing good-quality PDFs of the oldest input material, which had begun to deteriorate.
Taking care to preserve the original material, some of which constituted the only existing copies.
How we made this possible
Conducted R&D to arrive at the desired specification for the final deliverable.
Set up a highly automated workflow to streamline PDF generation and XML production workflow.
Scanned the source hard copy at 600 DPI following a well-validated sequenced process to generate the final PDFs.
Streamlined the steps in Photoshop (dust/clean-up, orientation, and color mapping, sizing) and in Adobe Acrobat (alignment, PDF settings and text search ability).
